Automotive SEO is the work of getting a car or two-wheeler dealership, used car lot, garage, service centre or accessories shop found when nearby buyers search Google for a model, a service or "near me". In practice it comes down to four things: a correctly structured Google Business Profile, one useful page per vehicle and per service, a steady flow of genuine reviews, and local content that answers what buyers actually type.
This playbook is written for Indian dealers and workshops, including the Google rules that trip dealerships up and what changed with vehicle listing markup.
How people search for cars, bikes and service in India
Automotive searches are short, local and full of intent. Someone typing "used Swift in Nagpur" or "Activa service near me" wants a price, a location and a phone number, often in the same session. Most searches follow a few patterns: model plus city ("Nexon on road price Nagpur"), used and second hand ("second hand Innova under 10 lakh"), service near me ("Maruti service centre Hingna", "denting painting near me"), parts and accessories ("seat covers for Nexon"), and research questions ("petrol or CNG for city use").
Each pattern needs a different page. The common mistake is sending every one of them to the homepage.
| Business type | Searches you want | Page that should rank |
|---|---|---|
| New car or bike dealer (authorised) | "[brand] showroom [city]", "[model] on road price [city]" | Business Profile, model pages with local pricing |
| Used car dealer | "used [model] in [city]", "used cars under 5 lakh" | Vehicle pages, category pages by budget, body type and fuel |
| Service centre or garage | "car service near me", "[brand] service centre [area]" | Service profile, one page per service and brand |
| Two-wheeler workshop | "Activa service near me", "bike repair [area]" | Business Profile, service menu with price ranges |
| Accessories and detailing | "ceramic coating [city]", "seat covers for [model]" | Pages per job with photos of real work |
Portals like CarDekho, Cars24, Spinny and OLX dominate broad "used car" searches, and you will rarely outrank them for "used cars India". You can beat them on local, specific, ready-to-buy searches, because Google's map results favour businesses that are close to the searcher and well reviewed.
Google Business Profile for dealerships: the rules that matter
For most dealers and garages, the Business Profile drives more calls than the website. It is also where dealer SEO goes wrong most often, because Google has specific guidelines for auto dealers. If your basic listings are still incomplete, start with our guide to search engine listing for local businesses.
Departments: sales, service and parts
Google's help page on Business Profiles for car dealerships allows extra profiles for departments such as sales, parts and service. Name each one as the dealership name plus the department, with the recommended categories: "Car dealer" for sales, "Car service" for maintenance and "Auto parts business" for parts.
The general guidelines add that a department must operate as a distinct, publicly facing entity with a name different from the main business. In practice that means its own entrance or counter, category and often hours. A workshop with its own reception qualifies. A parts shelf inside the showroom does not.
Multiple brands and used car dealers
- New car dealers can have a profile for each brand of new cars they sell.
- Used car dealers cannot have profiles per brand, because their stock changes constantly.
- No combined names: one profile called "Maruti Hyundai Motors" breaks the rules. Pick one brand name, or create separate profiles if the brands operate independently.
- Hours: use car sales hours, and if new and pre-owned sales hours differ, use the new sales hours.
Your profile name must match your real signage. Adding "Best Car Service Nagpur" to the name invites suspension. Put the effort into allowed fields instead: accurate secondary categories, services with short descriptions (periodic service, insurance claims, pick-up and drop), fresh real photos of the showroom and service bay every month, and a phone number someone answers during listed hours.
Inventory pages: give every vehicle its own page
For used car and used bike dealers, inventory pages are the core of SEO for automotive sites. A buyer searching "used Baleno 2021 Nagpur" wants that exact car, not a gallery of 40 thumbnails. Give each vehicle its own URL, such as /used-cars/maruti-baleno-2021-zeta-petrol-nagpur; our explainer on URL slugs covers how to keep these clean.
A good vehicle page has make, model, variant, year, fuel and city in the title; a spec block (kilometres, ownership, transmission, RTO, insurance validity); price with an indicative EMI; 15 to 25 real photos including the odometer and any scratches; honest inspection notes; and one clear call, WhatsApp or test drive button visible on a phone.
Then build category pages that group stock the way people search: by budget ("used cars under 5 lakh in Nagpur"), body type, fuel and brand. These stay live while individual cars come and go, so they carry most of the ranking weight over time. The same logic powers good online stores, as our ecommerce SEO strategies guide explains.
What to do when a vehicle sells
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Sold in the last few days | Keep the page, mark it "Sold", show similar cars in stock |
| Sold weeks ago, no links or traffic | Remove it (404 or 410) and drop it from the sitemap |
| Page has backlinks or steady traffic | Redirect to the closest category page |
| Same car on several filter URLs | Canonical tag pointing to the main vehicle URL |
If filter URLs are multiplying, our guide to canonical tags and sitemaps explains the fix.
Vehicle structured data: what still works in India
Many automotive SEO guides still tell dealers to add Google's vehicle listing markup for rich results. That advice is out of date. In June 2025 Google announced it was phasing out several structured data features, Vehicle Listing among them, and later updated the post to confirm these results have been phased out of Search. Google noted the change does not affect ranking.
Google's paid alternative, vehicle ads from Merchant Center, is not open to Indian dealers either: the vehicle ads overview lists countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan and parts of Europe, and India is not among them. Check again before planning around it.
Structured data is still worth adding to describe your business and stock to search engines and AI tools:
- Business markup: AutoDealer sits under AutomotiveBusiness alongside AutoRepair, AutoPartsStore, AutoBodyShop, MotorcycleDealer and MotorcycleRepair. Match name, address, phone and hours to your Business Profile exactly.
- Vehicle markup: the schema.org Car type supports
mileageFromOdometer, vehicleModelDate, fuelType, vehicleTransmissionandnumberOfPreviousOwners. It will not produce a special Google result today, so be wary of anyone selling it as a ranking trick.
Service pages and online booking
For garages and the workshop side of a dealership, service pages are where SEO for auto businesses earns repeat revenue. One "Services" page listing 20 jobs will not rank for any of them. Create one page per meaningful service: periodic service by brand ("Hyundai car service in Nagpur"), AC repair, clutch and brakes, denting and painting, insurance claims, wheel alignment, ceramic coating, and two-wheeler jobs like Activa periodic service.
Each page should state what is included, how long it takes, an honest price range based on your actual rates, pick-up and drop availability, and brands handled. Add a short booking form or a WhatsApp button with a pre-filled message like "I want to book a service for my Swift". If your current site cannot support separate vehicle and service pages, a properly built dealer website you can update yourself is the first fix.
Reviews: the car dealer SEO lever you fully control
Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence (which it also describes as popularity), and its page on improving your local ranking says more reviews and positive ratings can help. It also says there is no way to pay for a better local ranking. You cannot move your showroom closer to every buyer, but you can earn more reviews than the workshop down the road.
- At delivery: the happiest moment in the journey. Keep a review QR code on the delivery desk.
- At service pickup: send the review link on WhatsApp with the invoice.
- Right profile: send service customers to the service profile, not the sales one.
- Reply to every review, especially complaints about delays or billing, briefly and factually.
Google's tips to get more reviews recommend a review link or QR code and professional replies, and state that offering incentives such as a free wash or discount for a review is prohibited. Bought reviews fall in the same bucket, as our piece on white hat vs black hat SEO explains.
OEM website rules for authorised dealers
Authorised dealers of brands like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata, Honda, Hero or Bajaj work under a dealer agreement, and many manufacturers control how dealers present the brand online. Rules commonly cover whether you may run your own website or must use an OEM microsite, use of logos and the brand name in your domain, price and discount display, who manages the Business Profiles, and lead routing into the brand's CRM.
These rules differ by brand and change over time, so treat this as a list of questions, not the rules themselves. Read your agreement and check with your OEM regional team before registering a domain, renaming a profile or publishing prices. Even where the OEM controls the main site, you can usually still win with profiles, reviews and any used car or service site you are permitted to run.
Local content that brings in buyers
Local content earns visibility for the research searches that come before a purchase, and gives AI tools like Google's AI Overviews clear answers to quote, as covered in our guide to answer engine optimisation. Good topics for an Indian dealership or garage:
- "On road price of [model] in [city]": ex-showroom, RTO, insurance and accessories, updated when prices change.
- "[Model A] vs [Model B] for city driving", written by your own sales team.
- "Petrol, CNG or EV in Nagpur", using local fuel and charging facts you can verify.
- Seasonal checklists: monsoon car care, summer AC check.
- "How to transfer RC ownership in Maharashtra" for used car buyers.
Keep every price current. An outdated on road price page does more harm than no page.
What automotive SEO services should include
If you hire help, the deliverables matter more than the package name. Use this table to judge any car dealer SEO proposal. For what each price level usually buys, see our breakdown of SEO packages for small business.
| Deliverable | What good looks like | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| Business Profile setup | Correct profiles per department and brand, services, monthly photos | Keywords stuffed into the business name |
| Inventory SEO | Unique vehicle pages, category pages, a sold-car policy | No plan for sold cars or filter duplicates |
| Service pages | One page per main service, price ranges, booking action | One generic "Services" page |
| Technical health | Fast mobile pages, clean sitemap, indexing checked in Search Console | Never mentions Search Console |
| Reviews | A request process at delivery and pickup | Offers to buy or "boost" reviews |
| Reporting | Calls, direction requests, leads and bookings | Guaranteed first position on Google |
Ask who owns the profiles and website after the contract ends, and what the agency needs from your team each month. Dealer SEO depends on photos, stock updates and review requests that only people on the floor can supply.
A 90-day dealer SEO plan
- Weeks 1 to 2: fix Business Profiles (names, categories, departments, hours) and claim or merge duplicates.
- Weeks 2 to 4: check indexing in Search Console and set the sold-vehicle policy. If pages are missing from Google, work through our list of reasons a site is not showing on Google.
- Weeks 3 to 6: rebuild vehicle page templates and create your top category pages.
- Weeks 4 to 8: publish pages for your eight to ten most profitable services.
- Weeks 6 to 12: run the review process, publish two or three local pieces a month, and add schema.org markup to location pages.
Map visibility usually moves first; category and content pages take a few months. Paid search can cover launches and festive offers, so plan Google and Meta ads alongside SEO. For what local SEO can do, our Occasion Cakes case study shows Business Profile calls rising from 90 to 252 a month over five months. It is a bakery, not a dealer, but the local mechanics are the same.

Frequently asked questions
What is automotive SEO?
Automotive SEO is search engine optimisation for car and bike dealers, used car dealers, garages, service centres and accessories shops. It covers Google Business Profile setup, vehicle and service pages, reviews, technical health and local content so that nearby buyers find you for model, service and near me searches.
Can a car dealership have more than one Google Business Profile?
Yes. Google allows dealerships separate profiles for departments such as sales, service and parts, named as the dealership name plus the department. New car dealers can also have a profile for each brand of new cars they sell, but used car dealers cannot have profiles per brand.
Does vehicle listing structured data still work for car dealer SEO?
Not for Google rich results. Google announced in June 2025 that it was phasing out vehicle listing results along with a few other structured data features, and said the change does not affect ranking. Schema.org Car and AutoDealer markup is still valid and helps describe your stock and business to search engines and AI tools.
How long does SEO for auto dealers take to show results?
Map pack visibility often improves within weeks of fixing Business Profiles and building reviews. Vehicle category pages, service pages and content usually take three to six months to gain steady rankings, depending on competition in your city and how consistently stock and content are updated.
How much do car dealer SEO services cost in India?
Prices vary widely by scope and number of locations. Small local SEO retainers often start around ₹10,000 to ₹20,000 a month, while multi-location dealer groups pay more. Judge proposals by deliverables such as Business Profile management, inventory pages and lead reporting, and avoid anyone guaranteeing rankings.
Can authorised dealers run their own website?
It depends on the manufacturer. Many OEM dealer agreements set rules on websites, logos, domain names, pricing display and lead routing. Read your agreement and confirm with your OEM regional team before launching a site or changing Business Profiles.
