A search engine listing means two different things, and a local business needs both. The first is getting your website indexed, so its pages can show up in Google and Bing results. The second is getting your business listed on Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Maps and Indian directories like Justdial and IndiaMART, so you appear on maps and in "near me" searches.
Below are both jobs in the order we would do them for a real shop, clinic or service business, with official documentation linked for every step.
What "search engine listing" actually means
The fix depends on which of these two problems you have.
| Website indexing | Business listing | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Search engines crawl and store your web pages | A profile with your name, address, phone, hours and reviews |
| Where it shows | The blue links in search results | The map pack, Google Maps, Bing Maps, Apple Maps, directories |
| Tools | Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, sitemaps | Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business, Justdial, IndiaMART |
| Needs a website? | Yes | No, but it helps a lot |
| Cost | Free | Free on Google, Bing and Apple; directories vary |
If you have no website yet, start with the business listing today and build a simple site next. Our Hindi guide on how to make your own website covers the basics, or see our website development service if you want it built for you.
Part 1: Get your website indexed by Google and Bing
Search engines find most sites by following links, but telling them directly is faster and gives you a dashboard that shows why a page is missing.
Google Search Console and your sitemap
- Add your site in Google Search Console. The domain property option covers every version (www or not, http or https).
- Verify ownership, usually by adding a DNS record at your domain registrar.
- Find your sitemap. Most builders and SEO plugins create one, often at
/sitemap.xml. - Submit it in the Sitemaps report. Google's sitemap documentation also lets you add a
Sitemap:line to your robots.txt file, and notes that a single sitemap can hold up to 50,000 URLs or 50MB uncompressed.
One caveat: Google calls a sitemap a hint, not a command. Thin or duplicate pages can still be left out.
Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow
Bing is smaller in India than Google, but it is worth ten minutes. Add your site in Bing Webmaster Tools (it offers an import from Google Search Console, which saves the verification step) and submit the same sitemap.
Then consider IndexNow, a simple ping that tells participating search engines when a URL is added, updated or deleted. Microsoft Bing, Yandex, Naver, Seznam.cz and Yep take part.
How to check it worked
- Use the URL Inspection tool in Search Console on your homepage and your main service pages.
- Open the Pages report and read the reasons listed under "Not indexed". "Crawled, currently not indexed" usually means the page needs more useful, original content.
Part 2: Get your business listed on Google, Bing and Apple Maps
Google Business Profile comes first
The map pack with three businesses is usually the first thing a local searcher sees, and it runs on Google Business Profile. Search for your business on Google Maps first. If a profile already exists, claim it instead of creating a duplicate, then verify it.
Google's help page on improving your local ranking says local results are based mainly on three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher) and prominence (how well known you are, including links and reviews). The same page says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. So ignore any "guaranteed top 3 on Maps" offer.
What you control:
- Complete details: exact business name, address, service area, phone, website, hours and special holiday hours.
- Categories: one precise primary category plus a few relevant secondary ones (more on this below).
- Attributes, photos and videos: parking, payment options, your shopfront, team and real work. Real photos beat stock images.
Bing Places and Apple Business
Bing Places for Business lets you claim or create a listing, and it can import details from an existing Google Business Profile, which makes it a quick job once Google is done. Apple's Apple Business lets you claim your location on Apple Maps and control your logo, hours, images and key details. It is what iPhone users see when they search on Apple Maps, so it is worth fifteen minutes even if few of your customers use an iPhone.
Business listing websites in India: which ones are worth your time
Indian directories can send enquiries directly, and all of them act as citations that confirm your name, address and phone. You do not need fifty. Pick the core platforms and the ones built for your industry.
| Platform | Best for | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Every local business; Google Search and Maps | Free |
| Bing Places for Business | Bing Search and Bing Maps | Free |
| Apple Business (Apple Maps) | iPhone users searching on Apple Maps | Free to claim a location |
| Justdial | Consumer services and shops: repairs, clinics, coaching, home services | Free basic listing; paid plans, check current plans |
| Sulekha | Service providers who want enquiries: home services, tutors, events, packers and movers | Check current plans |
| IndiaMART | B2B: manufacturers, wholesalers, traders, industrial suppliers | Free listing; paid seller plans, check current plans |
| TradeIndia | B2B suppliers and exporters | Check current plans |
| Facebook Page and Instagram business profile | Every business; shows up in branded searches and social discovery | Free |
| Industry platforms (Zomato and Swiggy for food, Practo for clinics, hotel booking sites for stays) | Businesses in those categories, where customers already search | Commission or plan based, check current plans |
Before paying for a premium directory plan, ask how many enquiries similar businesses in your city got last month, and take the shortest contract available. A complete free listing already does most of the citation work. Restaurants have their own mix of platforms and reviews, which we cover on our restaurant marketing page.
NAP consistency and categories: the boring part that decides rankings
NAP stands for name, address and phone. Search engines compare it across your website, your Google profile and every directory, and mismatches make them less sure all those mentions are one business.
A simple NAP master sheet
- Write one official version of your business name, exactly as it appears on your signboard. Do not add keywords like "Best Electrician Nagpur" to the name; Google's guidelines ask for your real-world name.
- Write one address format, including shop number, building, landmark, area, city and PIN code, and use it everywhere.
- Pick one primary phone number for listings. Swapping numbers every year is one of the most common reasons Indian listings fall out of sync.
- List every platform with its login email, then search your old phone numbers and old addresses on Google to find forgotten listings, then update or remove them.
Choosing categories
Your primary category on Google Business Profile is one of the strongest relevance signals you control. Choose the most specific option that describes your core service: "Pest control service" rather than "Service establishment", or "Interior designer" rather than "Design agency". Add secondary categories only for services you actually offer.
Reviews and reputation: how to respond, and when online reputation management companies are worth it
Reviews feed the prominence signal, and customers read them before they call. Aim for a steady flow of genuine reviews and a consistent reply habit.
Getting more reviews without breaking the rules
Google's fake engagement policy is specific. It bans paid reviews, reviews offered in exchange for discounts or freebies, reviews from people with a conflict of interest such as staff or family, and selectively asking only happy customers. It does allow you to encourage genuine reviews as long as there is no incentive and no attempt to influence the rating.
In practice: send your review link on WhatsApp right after the job, print a QR code to it on the bill or counter, and ask every customer, not just the happy ones.
How to reply to reviews
Google's help page on reading and replying to reviews confirms you must verify your profile before replying, that replies appear as coming from the business, and that the reviewer is notified and can still edit their review.
- Positive review: thank them by name, mention the specific service, keep it to two lines.
- Negative review: reply within a day or two, do not argue in public, acknowledge the problem, and offer a phone number or WhatsApp to fix it.
- Fake or abusive review: flag it through Google's reporting option for policy violations and post one short, factual reply. You cannot delete a customer's review yourself.
When an online reputation management company is worth paying for
Most small businesses do not need online reputation management companies. A disciplined owner with a review link and ten minutes a day covers it. Paying a specialist makes sense when:
- You have multiple branches and more reviews across Google, Justdial, Zomato or Practo than anyone in-house can handle.
- A real crisis, such as a viral complaint or a news story, is showing up in searches for your brand name.
Walk away from any agency that offers to "remove negative reviews" or "add 100 five-star reviews". Both break Google's policy and can get reviews or the whole profile removed.
Keyword research for local SEO: a 30-minute method
Local searches follow a predictable pattern: service plus place, or service plus "near me". The work is finding your customers' exact words.
- List your services in customer language. "AC repair", "AC service", "AC gas filling" and "split AC installation" are four different searches, not one.
- Add places. City, the main areas you serve (in Nagpur that might be Dharampeth, Manish Nagar or Wardha Road), and "near me".
- Use free signals. Type each service into Google and note autocomplete suggestions and the "People also ask" questions.
- Check volume roughly. Google Keyword Planner gives ranges that are good enough to rank ideas.
- Mine your own data. Search Console's Performance report and your Google Business Profile performance view show the searches that already find you.
- Map one main keyword to one page. Your homepage targets the core service and city; each major service gets its own page; area pages only if you genuinely serve and can say something specific about that area.
Check Hindi and Hinglish phrasing too, such as "AC repair wala near me"; few local competitors write for it.
Industry notes: electricians, cleaning, pest control, hotels and interior designers
Electrician SEO
Electricians usually travel to customers, so set up Google Business Profile as a service-area business and hide your home address if customers do not visit you. Electrician SEO runs on calls, so make the phone number prominent. Write a page for each job type people search for, such as wiring, inverter installation and MCB or switchboard repair, and mention any licence you hold.
Cleaning service SEO
Customers search by job: "sofa cleaning", "bathroom deep cleaning", "full home cleaning before Diwali". Cleaning service SEO works best with one page per job, clear starting prices, and before and after photos on both your site and your profile.
SEO for pest control
Pest control buyers often search in a hurry and by pest: termite, cockroach, bed bugs, mosquito. Good SEO for pest control means a page per pest, a clear note on safety for children and pets, and any certifications you hold. Give annual contracts (AMC) for offices and restaurants their own page.
SEO services for hotels
Hotels compete with booking platforms for their own name. SEO services for hotels should focus on winning branded searches (so guests can book direct), filling Google Business Profile with room photos, amenities and check-in times,. If you are choosing an SEO agency for hotels, ask how they handle reviews on Google and booking platforms.
Digital marketing for interior designers
Interior design is a visual, high-ticket purchase. Digital marketing for interior designers should put real project photos on Google Business Profile, a portfolio site with one page per completed project (location, budget range, scope), and Instagram for discovery. Paid ads on Google and Meta can bring enquiries faster while organic search builds; our digital marketing service covers that side.
What a search engine listing can do: one real example
Occasion Cakes, a D2C bakery in the UAE, is a good example of what consistent local listing work does over time. Over five months of local SEO and Google Business Profile work, online orders went from about 70 to 218 a month, profile calls from 90 to 252 a month, and the number of searches where they appear in the local top three went from 0 to more than 40. The full breakdown is in the Occasion Cakes case study.
A 30-day search engine listing checklist

Frequently asked questions
How do I get my business listed on Google for free?
Search for your business on Google Maps, then claim the existing profile or create a new one through Google Business Profile and complete verification. Fill in every field, choose a specific primary category and add real photos. The listing is free, and Google says you cannot pay for a better local ranking.
What are the best business listing websites in India?
Start with Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Business, which are free. Then add Justdial for consumer services, Sulekha for service enquiries, and IndiaMART or TradeIndia for B2B suppliers, plus platforms specific to your industry such as Zomato, Practo or hotel booking sites. Check each directory's current plans before paying for premium placement.
How long does it take for a new website to appear on Google?
It varies from a few days to a few weeks for most small sites. Submitting a sitemap in Google Search Console and requesting indexing for key pages helps, but Google treats a sitemap as a hint, so there is no guaranteed timeline. Pages that are thin or duplicate may not be indexed at all.
Do I need an online reputation management company?
Most small businesses do not. Asking every customer for a review and replying to each one yourself covers the basics. A specialist is worth considering if you have many branches, a large volume of reviews across platforms, or a public crisis affecting searches for your brand. Avoid anyone who promises to remove negative reviews or add five-star ones.
How do I do keyword research for local SEO?
List your services in the words customers use, combine them with your city, key areas and "near me", then check Google autocomplete, People also ask and the businesses in the map pack. Use Google Keyword Planner for rough volumes and Search Console for the searches that already find you. Give each main keyword its own page.
