Outsourcing SEO to India makes sense when you want skilled, English-speaking SEO execution at a lower monthly cost than most US, UK or Gulf agencies charge, and you are willing to manage the work properly. The savings are real, but they only turn into results if you pick the right engagement model, keep ownership of your accounts, run a paid trial first and agree in writing what "done" means each month.
This guide is for agencies wanting a white-label partner, startups not ready for an in-house team, and enterprises weighing an offshore SEO outsourcing company for scale.
Why companies are outsourcing SEO to India
The first reason is cost. In Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO service providers, 76% of Indian respondents charged $1,000 a month or less for a retainer and 85.7% charged $30 an hour or less. In the same survey, 79.1% of providers in the US and Canada charged at least $1,001 a month, and the overall average retainer across all countries was $2,917 a month.
The second reason is talent depth. India has a large pool of people working in technical SEO, content, web development and analytics, and most of them work in English every day. A good Indian SEO outsourcing agency can usually staff a project with a strategist, a technical specialist, writers and a developer without you hiring any of them.
The third reason is coverage. India Standard Time (UTC+5:30) sits close to the Gulf, overlaps with the UK morning and runs while the US sleeps.
Who buys SEO outsourcing services
- Agencies and SEO resellers who sell SEO under their own brand and need a delivery team behind them.
- Startups and small businesses abroad that need consistent execution but not a full-time team yet.
- Enterprises that keep strategy in-house and outsource volume work: audits, content production, technical tickets and reporting.
- Indian metro brands that find agencies in smaller cities cost less for the same work.
One honest caution: a low hourly rate is not a low cost per result. Cheap SEO that needs constant correction, or builds risky links, can cost far more than it saves.
SEO outsourcing engagement models compared
Most SEO outsourcing falls into four models, differing in who owns strategy, how you are billed and how much control you keep. Single brands on a retainer can compare what each price point should include in our guide to SEO packages for small business.
| Model | Best for | How it is billed | Your control | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| White-label / reseller | Agencies selling SEO under their own brand | Per client, per package or per task | You own the client; partner delivers silently | Quality slips and your brand takes the blame |
| Dedicated team | Enterprises and agencies with steady volume | Monthly cost per full-time person | High: you direct their daily work | You carry the management load |
| Project | Audits, migrations, site launches, one-off clean-ups | Fixed fee per project | Clear scope, clear end date | Fixes found but never implemented |
| Retainer | Startups and SMBs wanting ongoing SEO | Fixed monthly fee for agreed deliverables | Medium: partner plans, you approve | Vague scope that drifts into "reporting only" |
White-label SEO and SEO resellers
In a white-label setup, the Indian outsource SEO company works behind your agency. Reports carry your logo, and your client may never know a partner exists. This works well when the partner has a documented process and you still review every deliverable before it reaches the client.
The danger is distance: you answer to the client for work you did not do, so insist on access to your partner's data and never let them build links or publish without your sign-off.
What to outsource and what to keep in-house
Split work by how much business context it needs. Execution travels well; judgment about your brand, margins and customers does not.
Good candidates to outsource
- Technical audits, crawl monitoring and fixing issues such as broken links, redirect chains and indexing problems
- Keyword research and content briefs, reviewed by someone who knows your customers
- On-page optimisation: titles, meta descriptions, internal links, schema markup
- Content drafting for informational topics, with your team editing for accuracy and voice
- Local SEO tasks such as Google Business Profile posts, citation clean-up and review responses
- Monthly reporting and rank tracking
Keep these in-house (or at least owned by you)
- SEO strategy and priorities, tied to revenue goals
- Final approval on anything published under your name, especially product claims, prices, medical, legal or financial content
- Decisions about link building and which sites you want to be associated with
- Ownership of every account, tool login and piece of data
- Relationships with your developers, so SEO fixes actually ship

How to vet an SEO outsourcing company or agency
Google publishes its own advice on how to choose and work with an SEO, and it is the best starting point for any buyer. It suggests asking for examples of past work, checking whether the provider follows Google Search Essentials, asking what results to expect and in what timeframe, and talking to past clients.
Questions to ask before you sign
- Can you show two or three case studies with real before and after numbers, and can I speak to one of those clients?
- Who exactly will work on my account, and what happens when that person leaves?
- How do you build links? Can you show me examples of links you have earned recently?
- Will you share every change you make and the reasoning behind it?
- Which tools do you use, and will I get access to the same data?
- What does your first 90 days look like, and how will we measure progress before rankings move?
Red flags that should end the conversation
- Guaranteed rankings. Google states plainly that no one can guarantee a number one ranking.
- Cold emails promising page one. Google advises treating unsolicited SEO emails with the same scepticism as other spam.
- Link packages sold by the hundred. Buying or selling links that pass ranking credit is listed under link spam in Google's spam policies, and sites that violate those policies may rank lower or disappear from results.
- Mass-produced pages. Hundreds of thin, auto-generated city or keyword pages can fall under the scaled content abuse policy.
- Secrecy. A provider who will not explain what they did, or who wants to hold your accounts in their name, is a provider you cannot leave cleanly.
We cover why these shortcuts backfire in more depth in white hat vs black hat SEO. Remember that you are responsible for what any company you hire does to your site.
Run a paid trial project first
Before committing to a long retainer, give the shortlisted seo outsourcing service a small, paid, clearly defined project. Good trial projects take two to four weeks and produce something you can judge on quality alone:
- A technical audit of your site with a prioritised fix list
- Content briefs and two finished articles for keywords you choose
- A local SEO audit of one location, including Business Profile and citations
Judge the trial on accuracy, prioritisation and communication, not rankings, which rarely move in two to four weeks.
Account access and ownership: keep the keys
The single most important rule in SEO outsourcing is that every account stays in your name. Give your partner the access they need through each platform's user roles, and never hand over passwords to accounts they would own.
- Google Search Console: you stay the verified owner. Search Console's permission levels let you add a partner as a full user (who can inspect URLs and submit sitemaps) or a restricted user (view only). Google's hiring guide suggests read-only access during an audit. When the engagement ends, remove the user and any verification tokens they added.
- Google Analytics 4: GA4 access roles range from Administrator down to Viewer. Analyst or Viewer is enough for reporting, and you can hide cost and revenue metrics if you prefer.
- Google Business Profile: add your partner as a manager, not an owner. Managers can edit the profile but, per Google's Business Profile roles, cannot add or remove users or delete the profile.
- Domain registrar and hosting: keep these entirely in-house. If a developer needs server access, create a separate login you can revoke.
- CMS (WordPress, Shopify, Webflow): create named user accounts with the lowest role that does the job, never a shared admin login.
- SEO tools: ask for exported data or a client login so your history survives the contract.
Write into the contract that all content, reports, keyword research and accounts created for you belong to you from the day they are paid for.
Communication, time zones and contracts
Most failed outsourcing relationships fail on communication, not skill. Agree upfront on one named account manager, a shared task board, a weekly written update, a monthly results call and a response time such as one business day.
Working across time zones
IST is UTC+5:30 all year, because India does not use daylight saving. That puts it 1.5 hours ahead of the UAE, 4.5 to 5.5 hours ahead of the UK and 9.5 to 10.5 hours ahead of US Eastern time, depending on the season. In practice:
- Gulf clients share almost the whole working day.
- UK and European clients get a comfortable overlap in their morning, which is the Indian afternoon.
- US clients usually agree on a short overlap window, either early US morning or late US evening, plus written async updates.
Contract clauses to insist on
| Clause | What it should say |
|---|---|
| Scope and deliverables | A monthly list of specific outputs, not "ongoing optimisation" |
| Ownership | All content, data and accounts belong to the client |
| Link building disclosure | Every link built is reported with its URL; no paid links that pass ranking credit |
| Confidentiality | An NDA covering your data and, for agencies, your client list |
| Data protection | How customer or analytics data is accessed, stored and deleted |
| Notice period | 30 days is common; avoid long lock-ins before a trial has proven the partner |
| Exit handover | Access removed, files delivered and tokens cleaned up within an agreed period |
For tax treatment of cross-border services, including GST and withholding rules, check with your own accountant rather than relying on the agency.
Enterprise SEO: what changes at scale
Enterprise SEO companies, often listed in procurement as enterprise search engine optimization companies, are judged differently from small-business agencies. The SEO principles are the same, but the hard part is getting changes approved, built and released across a large site without breaking anything.
Scale and process
A site with tens of thousands of URLs needs crawl monitoring, templates rather than page-by-page fixes, and SEO requirements written as developer tickets with acceptance criteria. Ask any enterprise partner how they work with your engineering sprints, how they test changes on staging and how they catch regressions after a release.
Governance
Large companies need clear rules: who can publish, who approves claims, which teams own which sections and how SEO changes are logged. If an agency suggests skipping approvals to move faster, treat it as a warning.
International SEO
Many enterprises outsource SEO to India precisely because they run sites in several countries or languages. Google's guidance on managing multi-regional and multilingual sites covers the essentials: choose a clear URL structure (country domains, subdomains or subdirectories), mark language and regional versions with hreflang, and do not automatically redirect visitors by IP address, because Googlebot mostly crawls from the US and may never see your other versions.
AI search and content at scale
Ask how the partner uses AI tools, who fact-checks output and how they prepare content to be cited in AI answers. Our guide to answer engine optimisation explains what that work involves. For large online stores, the same scale questions apply to category and product pages, covered in our ecommerce SEO strategies.
The honest risks of SEO outsourcing
Outsourcing to any country carries risk, and India is no exception. These are the problems buyers report most often, with the fix for each.
| Risk | How to reduce it |
|---|---|
| Low-quality or risky links that trigger a manual action | Require every link to be reported; ban paid link packages in the contract |
| Generic content that does not reflect your expertise | Provide subject-matter input and keep final edit rights |
| Staff turnover on the agency side | Ask for documented processes and a named backup |
| Reports full of activity but no business outcomes | Agree on leads, orders or revenue from organic search as the headline metric |
| Losing data or accounts at the end of the contract | Keep ownership of everything from day one |
None of these risks are unique to India; distance simply makes weak process harder to spot, so vetting and contracts matter more.

Frequently asked questions
Is outsourcing SEO to India safe?
It is safe when you vet the provider and keep control. Keep Search Console, analytics, Business Profile, domain and hosting in your own name, give the partner access through user roles, and ban paid link packages in the contract. Most problems come from weak process, not from the country.
How much does an SEO outsourcing service in India cost?
In Ahrefs' survey of SEO providers, 76% of Indian respondents charged $1,000 a month or less and 85.7% charged $30 an hour or less. Actual quotes depend on scope, site size and how many markets you target. Timewheel's SEO service starts at ₹15,000 a month.
What is white-label SEO and how do SEO resellers use it?
White-label SEO is when an outsourcing partner does the SEO work and your agency sells it under its own brand, with reports carrying your logo. SEO resellers use it to offer SEO without hiring a full team. You stay accountable to the client, so review every deliverable before it goes out.
How do I choose an SEO outsourcing company?
Ask for case studies with real numbers and a client reference, check how they build links, and confirm they follow Google Search Essentials. Avoid anyone who guarantees rankings. Then run a small paid trial project before signing a long retainer.
What should enterprise SEO companies offer that smaller agencies may not?
Enterprise work needs crawl monitoring at scale, SEO requirements written as developer tickets, testing on staging, clear governance and international SEO skills such as hreflang audits. Ask how the partner fits into your release process and approval rules.
Should I outsource all of my SEO?
Usually not. Outsource execution such as audits, on-page work, content drafts, local SEO tasks and reporting. Keep strategy, final approval of published content, link building decisions and ownership of every account with your own team.
